Weekly War Blog 18th Feb 2012

Salutations my human friends! It's me .... Pengy... safely in my bunker at HQ.

No moths have been allowed to hide in the folds of the flags.
Both Union Jack and Stars and Stripes have been run up the flag pole over the last 7 days play.
The top ten players so far ...
1. jules44 UK
2. hammerdjh USA
3. Anton USA
4. Clamking USA
5. morelli UK
6. WorldB USA
7. paper_aeroplane UK
8. markswood UK
9. j2cp2 USA
10. dippo UK
5 Americans & 5 UK & Co!
This is nailbiting stuff. You can't get more closely fought than that. And every single one but Anton a Fearsome Invincible. I say ... he's rather good isn't he.
But how goes it on the rest of the Challenge battlefield? After 2 weeks of daily skirmishing the combatants have bunched into groups. For safety I suppose ... no one wants to be ambushed or caught behind enemy lines. Ah .. but I can see with my telescope that a few poor souls have been trapped amongst the foe and are bravely battling their own private war. Or .. it could be they're courageous mavericks who're tackling the foe head on?
Pengy Call to Arms!
Reinforcements needed for
Martin cube
who's valiantly chasing suep ... but with Schoonie101 .. timmacg .. Qmel and shadowzep snapping at his heels will he trounced or taken out by cunning sniper fire!
Good to see you there shadowzep ... the USA needs you ... like it's never needed it brave fighters before.
Argh! I've just spotted a potential casualty to come! Almost a dead cert. Pengy always sides with the underdog so johnsnow ... you've just become my fave player!
Quick ... someone help him. My little heart just skipped a beat surveying his dangerous postion in the trenches. There's a posse of UK infront of him ... and there's a posse of UK behind him as well. He'll need nerves of galvanized steel to survive that lot.
rockgirl USA is giving a good account of herself ... well done there! Whilst fending off trooper2196 and polaris she's catching tisonlyme UK ... part of small posse led by miffy42. This is what I love about these battles ... everyone is so spirited and I hope Mr Obama and Mr Cameron truly appreciate your patriotism as much as I do. Rivals but friends. Less of the sentimentality ... back to the war, there's no place for sentimentality in war ... where I see the more cunningly tactical of you are working in pairs. Astralspace and shadow have trampled over onebraincelluk .. stay down onebraincell, don't get up out of the mud ... it'd be pointless as poppop4 and gracie are storming your way and will only leave tread marks imprinted on your back!
But have no fear ... the medics, correction, the sole medic, that's me .. will be along with bandages and restorative nibbles filched from the smorgasbord.
Qmel will probably donate a Big Mac as she's a kind hearted generous soul ... or martin cube has spare ribs on the menu. Ah .. I think the spare ribs please ... they might come in really handy for a pulverized player.
Aside from the tantalizing smells wafting from the Pit there is also the whiff of fear in the air on the Survivor.
Flopsy romped in first yesterday! Pengy is cheering you! Well done there and to Maggie and LauraMcC for making it a UK hat-trick ... and well done to all from both sides who avoid jules and Clamkings trampling footsteps as they fight to grab most daily wins.
No one gets eliminated now in the new Geneva Convention War Rules but the fight will get tougher ... as I notch up the difficulty level of the questions. Anyone yet abandoned the field or become a casualty of war? Ah ... five or six. But my admiring beady eye is on shadowzep. Only played for 12 days ... and claimed victory on one them .. and is still thick in the midst of the fight. This is a sign of true grit.
My flipper has just wavered over the difficulty settings ... Pengy Alert!
It's time for the questions to get gruelling and brain numbing!

Weekly War Blog 11th Feb 2012

Hello again!
Another week of ferocious fighting has past. And great fun it is too isn't it!
This morning I scampered out and ran the Star & Stripes up the flag pole in honour of hammerdjh, yesterdays winner. A cheer for jules for the UK here too for getting that Union Jack flying for so many days. I knew the UK army wouldn't let our American friends romp off ahead after their cracking start. But what has happened to General miffy42? He's put in an appearance .. just the one ... and vanished again! Desertion in the face of enemy fire? War wounded? It's a fact he never made it over to the Survivor battle. Oh .. just double-checked .... he did. Pengy mistake.
Still ... onto other things of import. There were more than a few skirmishes on the go and those undaunted top USA Invincibles, .... hammerdjh, Anton and Clamking ... AKA Invincibles, are still there harrying jules's heels! Not far behind Schoonie101 USA and martin cube UK are thrashing it out. Ah ... you have to admire these cheeky players engaged in bun fights even whilst surrounded by a melee of cross-Atlantic bloodshed.
Qmel and suep are giving a good account of themselves. Not only have they left Stuhern lying battered and bruised on the trenches they've teamed up with timmacg. Hmm ... take care UK .. me ..I wouldn't want to bump into that tough little posse of Invincibles.
Markswood managed to hightail it out of danger ... but no one can beat paper aeroplane for a lightning getaway. Well done there for some impressive aeronautics!
So who caught my beady eye this week? Argentum and postcards2go. Two Amercian troopers who are gamely trying to defy the odds and catch a group of 7, yes! .. no less than 7 UK players just ahead of them. That takes guts! And a speedy scrolling mouse and well oiled clicking finger. And a well protected bum when trooper2196 Uk is following in your footsteps.
Next comes the murky miasma of the worst, most dangerous place to be in the trenches. There is no quarter given here ... no surrender ... if you're in this pack it's a fight to the death. From the referee's point of view ... where I also get to practice my medical skills this is the fun place!
It starts with blackprince and onebraincell in brave pursuit of rockgirl63 ... astralspace and poppop4 of the USA. This could be a valiant attempt to go to the rescue of tisonlyme UK who's been ambushed .. who in turn is undoubtedly aiming to lend support to strum. Wow .. this is a heroic bun fight that makes you shudder to watch .. and must surely make their scrolling finger spasm with nerves as they launch into daily battle. Anything could happen here and it remains to be seen who survives and crawls to the top of the struggling heap.
Speaking of Surviving ... I pan and zoom my telescope around to the Survivor battle. Where tantalizingly, mouthwatering smells waft from the Pit. Fresh nibbles are to be had everyday and if you think haggis sounds revolting wait until you've tasted tripe!
Now ... as we all know by now .. and if you don't you should and do now ... there is no cut-off on the new rules Survivor. But the questions get tougher with unrelenting sadism. I can be as tough and as mean as Piranha. Indeed I pride myself on my efforts to emulate him. My cunning ploy is to make your brains ache! The questions cranked up a notch in toughness last week ... are any of you starting to struggle just a teensy weensy bit? Be warned ... they will get tougher. But right now jules is leading the field for the UK ... with morelli and markswood fending off Americans WorldB and Clamking. Some of you have tumbled down the trenches ... but take heart! Other victims will probably fall by the wayside as well leaving the field clear for the most intrepid who manage to stay the course.
And me ... I shall camp by the Pit and throw food aid parcels onto the battlefield.

Weekly War Blog 4th Feb 2012

Hello! Welcome to the new weekly blog.

There's been 3 days of play .... so how does the fighting go on the Challenge?
Well, it's a good start by our American friends with Anton storming through the trenches and snatching 2 wins. Jules4 and magijoh1 leading the UK & Co army, not lacking in courage and in hot pursuit I might add, are surrounded by enemy Generals ... well, Invincibles actually but it has a more martial ring to it! The nearest ally is dippo down in the 9th bunker valiantly leading a small posse of reinforcements ... lg549, morelli and Stuhern. This could be an unpleasant , messy scene of carnage in the days to come with a defensive line of USA Invincibles in their path. I shall not mention their names ... these Fearsome One's who must be Feared.
At this early stage in the friendly hostilities there are always more than a few individual fights breaking out on the battlefield. So I shall pan my telescope around and zoom in.
Spotted one!
You have to admire Qmel and suep of the USA ... take care my friends! Whilst you're chasing Stuhern, hmm ... that's brave ... you have martin cube, markswood and paper aeroplane hot on your heels. There is many a brave war hero suffered a sniper shot from behind. I know these interesting things for fact , as I'm the volunteer medic who trots haphazardly through the missile range to tend to the poor fallen with aqua vitae, stern words and bandages.
Ah ... astralspace USA versus tisonlyme321 UK are engaged in hand to hand combat. Wonder who'll win that one? Both good players ... hard to bet on who'll be the victor ... but with onebraincelluk the nearest UK backup things aren't looking too good for the woadwearers there.
And my fave player so far?
Well, it has to be rockgirl63 for the USA. She's surrounded and yet ... battered and bruised she's grappling with Doctor Gas ... a hard opponent to get to grips with and has to hold out until postcard2go can reach her. I do love some of your names. They conjure up some fascinating images in my fishy mind. I'm routing for you rockgirl!
The most dangerous place ... and to be avoided at all costs is the big fist fight between poppop4 USA .. jacky UK .. twosleepy USA .. Quiz Beagle UK .. shadow USA .. blackprinceUk UK .. and gracie for the USA. Wow! And I can see Blackdresss fluttering closeby...and new enlistment soplar USA. Pengy prediction time! Everyone will limp away from that one with war wounds! You thought you were going to get a famous Pengy prophecy there for an outright winner didn't you? No chance. Not at this early stage in the fighting when you're all so sharp and alert and deadly. Next weeks blog will honour and commiserate the winners and the losers.
Did I mention I've got an armoured tank now? No? Well I have so I shall trundle across the Peace Zone to the bordering war on the Survivor.
There's sausage and chips and pepperoni on offer in the Pit. Now don't accuse me of irreverent spectatorship of blood sports ... for I only recently discovered that it was considered 'the thing to do', for the bored affluent gentlemen and their ladies to holiday at the Crimean War. They even took picnic baskets! And to redress the balance ...... picnic baskets were taken to the American Civil War too. So now you know. And isn't that amazing?
Back to modern warfare.
The UK & Co army are already threatening to take a decisive strangehold on my American buddies ... let them go! Famous last words? Let's hope not.
All players seem to be defending their trenches well ... so far ... but there's a bun fight between flopsy UK and twosleepy USA ... everyone else steer clear and don't get caught in the crossfire. Poor flopsy is surrounded in an ambush! I'm on the floppy eared flopsy's side! Who's nearest to help? Ah ... pc377. Who has a battle to win first against hammerdjh. Oh dear ... an Invincible and not just any Invincible but America's top #1 General. Bad luck pc377 and flopsy. I'll get the stretchers (and some lettuce leaves) ready then shall I? Perhaps the newly located smorgasbord in the Pit can double as a convalescence ward for the wounded too?

I'd like to say here that postcards2go ... a new USA recruit ... is giving a good account of himself or herself on both quizzes. Apologies here, I can never distinguish human gender.
And so ... I take a peek at the current stage of play for today ....
Hah! Yet again Anton has nailed the Stars and Stripes to the mast! After going AWOL he's back with a vengeance. Only 7 UK & Co players have run the gauntlet so far today ... can anyone beat his devilishly deadly score?
And pan around to the Survivor and ... hammerdjh is in the lead. It's an American double. What you going to do about that my UK friends?
I shall jog over now and settle down to watch on the sidelines.

ps. I can remember many aeons ago, that in addition to flying the small flag of last months winner on the quiz, I used to change the flag daily in honour of the Challenge's daily winner. I shall resurrect this custom as of now. I shall get the Star & stripes out of mothballs, shake out the spiders and run it up the mast. The flag ... not the spider ... you understand.

Crowning Champs Day. January 2012 Winners

Hello!
This is a special Crowning Champs Day .... a momentous day which will be remembered in all the best, most fearsome sagas and legends. Of a war that is fought by humans ... by the greatest nations on planet Earth.
Still, as usual I threaten to woffle on!
WARNING: This is an epic post, as is fitting, so get comfy and even better have a drink in your hand to raise a toast ...or two ... or three.

On to the interesting stuff!
The Challenge war.
Since July 2007 when war was declared, 574 brave warriors have enlisted and fought for their country on the Challenge battlefield ... with hopefully many more to come!
Ah .. I feel a nostalgic moment coming on.
These are the first ever brave heroes who won victory for their country. I thought you might to see it and pause a moment to honour them.

Three cheers and a Long Service Medal .. and it goes without saying, my undying admiration to magijoh1 , our first ever Challenge Champ, for his patriotism and ... continuous great play! I do believe he has attained the lofty heights of Olympus and gained Invincible status ever since! A worthy foe who must make our American cousins quake!
The famous fighters were the First ... and after vigorous recruiting the next monthly battle had 168 new fighters!

7. MaggieG UK
8. Mink UK
9. vivtriv UK
10. strnog1 USA
Ah .. mos6231 ... I remember him well. Still fights the good fight now and then but I remember him best for saying in that itty bitty little chat box that he'd sold his soul to help enhance his play! This is dedication to national prestige with a vengeance and to be admired. I do admire humans by the way and regard them as wondrous beings.
Especially those who gain Invincible status and reside on the lofty Mount Olympus. Fear these super beings for they are GREAT! The ground shakes and trembles when they come racing through the trenches with sparks flying from their heels.
Many Invincibles have climbed the heights and been evicted from off the ledges and these are our current Invincibles .... both armies most daunting generals who led the troops in January 2012.
USA Invincibles
#1 hammerdjh
#2 WorldB ... a true veteran and great fighter!

#4 Clamking
#5 Qmel ... also our brlliant provider of daily nibbles!
#6 suep

Sadly, Rage was evicted and tumbled from the heights ... but a cheer for johnsnow who jetpacked up to the windy eyrie!

#4 magijoh1 ... first ever Challenge Champ!
#5 markswood

#7 lg549
#8 paper aeroplane
#9 flopsy
#10 strum
miffy42
and martin cube tumbled of the ledge ... whilst flopsy and strum acheive eternal fame and supreme being status.
And now to the Crowning. I have burnished the crown till it makes my eyes water looking at my reflection in it. No .. I'm not narcistic ... but it's only the best for our current Challenge Champ.
jules44 will you kindly step forward and take your place on your throne ... dusted, oiled and plugged in so you can enjoy the gentle massage action on those tired aching muscles. It's tough been a champ and fighting off that stiff opposition. The Americans have some tough Generals to beat!
Don't move jules! Stay seated!
For you also claim the envious title of Mogul Maximus. The last ever Mogul Maximus.
The guillotine has now been dismantled and packed away and the crate freighted by plane to the French Goverment. A barbaric implement ... but fiendlishly great fun!
I shall retract that last remark .... as I'm a pacificist.
Since September 2007 a total of 244 Mogullers enlisted and raced to beat the 60 second guillotine. Heads have rolled, scalps have been shaved and nailed to totem poles but these are the first ... and the last ever Top 10 Moguls of all time. Remember these guys ... for you will never see their like again!

I say ... there's a few familiar names up in the first list!
I gulp at a lump in my throat. Where did the lost heroes and heroines go? Taken out by an enmey sniper? Retired with military honours? I wish them well wherever they are!
And as the first ... and the last of the greatest Moguls to have walked the planet I shall create a monument somewhere on this blog so we can forever remember their names. For pengy loves a fighter!
And so we move onto the Titans.
As with the Moguls we have fought the last skirmish here as the battle lines have moved.
Hostilities broke out in July 2008, and Invincibles were excluded, though a few rogue mavericks have stormed through the trenches with me in hot pursuit! I saw you yesterday, martin cube and markswood and Qmel. Hee..hee .. I almost joined you!
Over the years 125 players have enlisted for the Titans.

Will Doc please take a bow and come and claim your throne .. to reign forever! Yes .. you can keep the throne.
And now to the Survivor. Another great battle and one which will continue, with new battle rules. No elimination .. Piranha has retired. Though rumour has it that the last denizens of the Pit finally overcame and beat the fishy fiend.
135 players have so far dared to enlist in the toughest of all wars.

timmacg, take a bow and settle in your throne. But will you be able to keep it? Piranha might be defeated but the competiton (and the questions) are tough and only the toughest will survive.... but helpfully sustained by Qmel and martin cube now in charge of the cleaned out Pit. The convoys of nibbles are been transported as I type ... under pengy escort.
Finally ... my MOPS .. no, not domestic appendages for cleaning but my most tresured proteges.
Hail j2cp2! And magnificently won I might say. You romped up through the Challenge trenches and improved your ranking from December by 18 trenches.

Ah .. it's all so overwhelming and more than once I dabbed at my eyes. Come to think of it perhaps it was rather prophetic of me to call the champs ... Titansaurus Rex and Mogul Maximus.
The end of an era.
But not the end of the war.
The Challenge and the Survivor go on ... until one army surrenders
. ..as if, hey?
Throw away the tissues and shrug into your flak jackets. I shall jog over to the battlefields now with my aqua vitae and referees's baton.
ps. A big thank you to Piranha, AKA Stuhern, without which this great war would never have achieved such popularity and brought so many players such fun.

As a famous general once said .... I shall be back!
At weekend to report on the current war

Results from HQ for January 2012

A moments silence please ...
For this a memorable day in the annals of warfare. The stuff of legends that shall be spoken of down the ages, to come ....
Four monthly battles will become 2.

But how did the two warring armies do in January?

The Challenge
The USA army fielded 27 players, nabbed 5799 pts = 42% of the spoils of war.
The UK & Co army fielded 25 players, nabbed 8041 = 58% of the bigger, better spoils of war.
The UK & Co army won the January Challenge battle by a pretty impressive 16%.

The Titan
The USA army fielded 6 brave, undaunted troopers, won 1803 pts = 25%
The UK & Co army fielded 11 wondrous warriors, won 5410 pts = 75%
The UK & Co won the January Titan battle, the last battle ever .... by a staggering 50%!

The Mogul
The USA army slithered under the 60 second guillotine and bagged 2050 pts = 35%
The UK & Co army wriggled like electric eels under the head chopper and bagged 3830 pts = 65%
The UK & Co army won the January Mogul battle, the last ever, by a stunning 30%

The Survivor
The USA troopers eluded capture by Piranha long enough to win 1885 pts = 34%
The UK & Co warriors avoided capture by the fishy fiend long enough to grab 3705 = 66%
The UK & Co won the January Survivor battle by 32%!

I rattled my abacus and pondered the final overall winner of the four combined battles ... never tobe repeated again ...
The USA = 34% of the spoils.
The UK & Co = 66% of the battle trophies.
The UK & Co won the January War by 32%.

What can this stunned referee say?
I know ... I shall nip off and dust off the thrones. Remember the good old days when we crowned our champs and payed homage to our great worthy heroes and heroines? Watch this space! I just need to drag out the thrones .... crack open a bottle of shandy ... and I shall reminisce.
I shall be back!
